Transition, not a destination

Retirement is a transition, not a destination.

That’s where we have it all wrong.

You work hard and delay gratification for 40 years so that one day you can get to a place called retirement.

But when you get there, you find that retirement is really more like an endless stream of Saturdays. Monday never comes.

How do you fix that?

Find your purpose. Find a purpose. Find something to do that gives you life. That provides fulfillment. That gives you satisfaction and maybe even scares you a little.

Do something for someone else. Do for others. Do it with others.

A friend and client once said that he wasn’t looking to write his next chapter. He was looking to write a whole new book.

Leave your work for the last time with that in mind. It's not just the end of a chapter. It’s the end of that book, and there is more to write. A lot more.

I don’t think we were made to stop working entirely. I don’t think you were made to call it quits and not be useful.

As pastor Rick Warren has said, you were called for something more. Find out what that is. And do that.

You may have three or four more books to write before it's over.

Start now.
