Fostering well-being in retirement


When you retire, there can be significant changes to your lifestyle. It involves a transition from structured time to free time. It’s important to know what you are retiring to, not just what you are retiring from.

To make the most of your retirement years, doing the following may improve outlook and life satisfaction.

1. Create a reason to get up in the morning.

  • What will be your new purpose?
  • It could be family, passions, volunteering/giving back.
  • Set goals for yourself.
  • Focus on continuous learning.

2. Use time to work, help others, go to events, and other activities.

  • Consider part time work to stay busy.
  • Volunteer at organizations that support causes you care about.
  • Attend social events or entertainment.
  • Attend clubs to stay active or spend time doing hobbies you enjoy.

3. Socialize with friends and family; spend time with others.

  • Benefits include reduced stress, longer lifespan, increased physical activity, reduced risk of depression, and improved self-esteem.
  • Get together with family. Support them in their endeavors/passions.
  • Meet up with current friends and acquaintances regularly.
  • Use the internet to track down old friends who you may have lost touch with.
  • Joint clubs and senior organizations or start your own!

4. Foster healthy behaviors.

  • Reduces risk of developing certain health conditions.
  • Increases energy levels.
  • Boosts your immune system.
  • Improves mental health.

Retirement is so much more than just a number. It’s about making the most of your years that you’ve worked so hard for and finding meaning in your life outside of work. These should be some of the best years of your life. Focusing on these 4 things may help improve life satisfaction in retirement.
