You may be intrigued by the article title as many can’t resist a personal story. This is one of you and me.
I’ll go first.
I recently attended the Women’s Advisor Summit in Nashville. This is part of my job. It is my responsibility to stay informed and current to serve my clients. Ret. Colonel Nicole Malachowski delivered the closing speech at the conference about her incredibly successful life as an F-15 fighter pilot, instructor, and her position on The Thunderbirds. She talked about living an unscripted life. And that made me think about my life and expectations – leading me to think about your life and expectations.
Many of us believe life is a written script of expected outcomes based on life’s perception - a sense of order progressing from early life, to educated life, to experienced life.
My story growing up may be different than yours, but my expectations of what life might look like were probably similar in many ways – with perhaps even similar unscripted moments! So, how do so many people expecting the same outcome make so many decisions negatively impacting their outcomes? One observation is that many do not hold the knowledge of the future today. What I mean by that is that we don’t seek the information early on in life but wait until an event forces the action. We don’t expect the rewrites, yet we see them around us daily.
I am fortunate in many ways in that I have the knowledge, education, experience, and passion to plan for the unscripted life experiences and the accompanying financial impacts. My profession has revealed that many people do not have the same level of confidence in their outcomes, just expectations of it happening. When life happens, it can uncomfortably derail the happiest of times, and often has financial consequences. If only we taught finances at an early age rather than learning about money in the journey of life.
