What does a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst do?

As a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA®) and a member of the Institute for Divorce Financial Analysts, I’m here to shed some light on what I do and how I can help during one of life’s toughest transitions: divorce. If you’ve ever wondered how to navigate the financial maze that comes with splitting up, stick with me—I’ll walk you through it.

So, what’s my role? I specialize in the financial issues surrounding divorce. Think of me as your financial guide, helping you make sense of the numbers when emotions are running high. My job is to analyze your financial situation—everything from assets and debts to income and expenses—and provide clarity on how different settlement options might impact your future. I work with you (and often your attorney) to crunch the numbers, evaluate tax implications, and figure out what’s fair and sustainable long-term. Whether it’s dividing a retirement account, valuing a family business, or projecting alimony and child support, I’m there to help ensure you’re not left in the dark.

I also help with the “what-ifs.” What if you keep the house? What if your ex takes the pension? I use financial modeling to show you how these choices can play out over time, so you can make informed decisions rather than just guessing. Divorce isn’t just about ending a marriage—it’s about setting up your financial future, and I’m here to help you do that with more confidence.

Who benefits from hiring a CDFA® like me?

Now, you might be wondering, “Do I really need a CDFA?” Well, let me tell you who I’ve seen benefit the most from my work.

First, if you’re someone who hasn’t been the “money person” in your marriage, I can be a game-changer. Maybe your spouse handled the investments, taxes, or budgeting, and now you’re feeling overwhelmed. I step in to level the playing field, explaining things in plain language so you’re not at a disadvantage.

Second, if you’ve got a complicated financial situation, I’m your go-to. Couples with significant assets—like real estate, stock portfolios, or a business—often find that splitting things up isn’t as simple as 50/50. I dig into the details to help ensure nothing gets overlooked and that the division makes sense for both sides.

Third, if you’re worried about your financial future post-divorce, hiring me can ease that stress. I’ve worked with plenty of people who want to know, “Will I be okay?” Whether you’re a stay-at-home parent re-entering the workforce or someone nearing retirement, I help you map out a plan.

And finally, if you just want more peace of mind, I’m here for that too. Divorce is emotional enough without the added worry of financial missteps. Clients can sleep better at night knowing someone is double-checking the numbers and looking to support them.

In short, my role as a CDFA® is to help bring clarity, strategy, and a little bit of calm to the chaos of divorce.
